Lead-acid batteries have the highest recycling rate of any type of energy storage battery. The entire battery pack, including the plates, housing and electrolyte, can be disassembled and recycled. A mature and standardized recycling process ensures a closed-loop resource utilization system, significantly reducing the environmental pollution risks associated with the use of batteries for energy storage. Once disassembled, the lead plates are melted and cleaned to recondition the battery grids, the plastic casings are crushed and recycled to make new battery casings, and the electrolyte is neutralized and recycled. The overall material recycling rate exceeds 95%.
All types of lead-acid batteries, including small 12-volt low-voltage batteries, front-terminal communication batteries, and high-capacity 2-volt gel batteries, are compatible with existing recycling channels. Used batteries from communications equipment facilities, energy storage power plants and commercial low-voltage equipment can be centrally transported and recycled without the need for model classification. Compared with other types of energy storage batteries, the lead-acid battery recycling chain covers cities and towns at all levels throughout the country, with widespread collection points, making the transportation and disposal of used batteries from remote base stations and rural photovoltaic installations convenient.
Under normal operating conditions, lead-acid batteries do not emit heavy metals, and during use they are sealed to prevent waste fluid from leaking. Once disposed of, they are safely dismantled by professional companies, preventing heavy metal contamination of soil and water resources. Currently, communications, power and photovoltaic energy storage projects have standardized processes for recycling used batteries. When replacing end-of-life lead-acid batteries, recycling and transportation are carried out simultaneously, ensuring a stable power supply and environmentally friendly and sustainable use of energy storage sources.
